Stems prostrate or decumbent, 2–18 cm, retrorsely hairy. Leaves glabrous or sparsely puberulent, especially along margins, (2–)4–24 × 2–8 mm; blade obovate to elliptic.
Phenology: Flowering Jun–Jul.
Habitat: Sagebrush shrublands, scrub oak woodlands, spruce woodlands, talus slopes.
Elevation: 2000–3400 m.

Keck (1937) noted the strong resemblance of the type specimen to Penstemon caespitosus subsp. suffruticosus A. Gray (= P. xylus).
