Leaves cauline, opposite, leathery, glabrous or retrorsely hairy proximally, not glaucous; cauline short-petiolate or sessile, blade oblanceolate, obovate, or elliptic, margins toothed or entire. Thyrses interrupted, secund, axis glandular-pubescent, cymes 1 per node; peduncles and pedicels ascending to erect. Flowers: calyx lobes: margins entire, herbaceous, glandular-pubescent; corolla red, bilaterally symmetric, bilabiate, not personate, funnelform, glandular-pubescent externally, glandular-pubescent internally abaxially and adaxially, throat gradually inflated, not constricted at orifice, rounded abaxially; stamens included or longer pair reaching orifice, filaments glabrous, pollen sacs divergent, navicular to saccate, dehiscing completely or incompletely, sometimes distal 1/5–1/4 indehiscent, connective splitting, sides glabrous, sutures papillate or denticulate, papillae or teeth to 0.1 mm; staminode included, flattened distally, 0.3–0.4 mm diam., tip straight, glabrous; style glabrous. Capsules glabrous. Seeds dark brown, angled, 1.5–2 mm.
