Discussion

Variety purpureus is restricted to the Dubois Badlands in Fremont County. The specimens examined seem, on the whole, to be somewhat smaller and more compact than for most of the species, in which plant size and compactness varies greatly. The flowers are somewhat smaller than for var. gilviflorus. Other plants with blue corollas and the banner hairy on the back cited from Wheatland County in Montana, collected by C. L. Hitchcock were noted by R. C. Barneby (1964).
