Stems (10–)15–65 cm. Leaves: basal and proximal cauline 30–140 × 6–20 mm. Thyrses: axis usually sparsely glandular-pubescent, verticillasters 2–6. 2n = 32.


Phenology: Flowering Jul–Aug.
Habitat: Montane meadows.
Elevation: 1100–2400 m.

Discussion

Variety shastensis occurs at the northern end of the range of Penstemon heterodoxus in Butte, Lassen, Modoc, Plumas, Shasta, and Siskiyou counties.
