Leaflet blades linear to lanceo­late, terminal ones 3.5–11.5 × 0.3–2.3 cm, base truncate to subtruncate, apex acute to attenuate, often weakly to conspicuously lobed at base. Legumes 32–54 × 5–6 mm. Seeds 3–6, 3–4.5 × 2.5–4.5 mm. 2n = 22.

Phenology: Flowering Jun–Nov.
Habitat: Open pine-oak forests, mesquite thickets, grasslands, chaparral, scrub, igneous or lime­stone soils.
Elevation: 200–2000 m.

Discussion

Variety tenuifolius is found in central and southeastern Arizona, Doña Ana and Hidalgo counties in New Mexico, and El Paso and Jeff Davis counties in Texas.

Phaseolus angustissimus occurs within the range of var. tenuifolius and might be confused with it. Plants of var. tenuifolius can be distinguished from P. angustissimus by their fibrous roots and many-seeded pods.
