Hairs dendroid-stelliform, to 1 mm, glandular, occasionally also jointed, branched or simple, 2–4 mm, glandular. Corollas with deep purple-black spots. Fruiting calyces 25–35 mm wide. 2n = 24.


Phenology: Flowering Mar–Oct.
Habitat: Disturbed areas in sand.
Elevation: 0–20 m.

Discussion

Variety variovestita is found in extreme southern Texas, north along the coast to Aransas County.
