Leaves: petiole villous, hairs tawny to brown; blade somewhat lustrous adaxially, 52–97 mm, abaxial surface densely villous, hairs tawny.
Phenology: Flowering Jun–Jul.
Habitat: Upland and floodplain forests, sandhills, hammocks
Elevation: 0-400 m

Discussion
The type for the species was collected in Georgia; subsp. lanuginosum occurs mostly in the southeastern states.
