Leaf blades broadly elliptic, 3–5 cm, 2/3 to nearly full grown at anthesis, length/width = 1.3, thin to chartaceous, lobes 0 or 1 per side, obscure, max LII 10%, lobe apex usually obtuse, margins serrate, teeth 0.5 mm, apex usually subacute, adaxial surface matte, short-pubescent young. Inflorescence branches short-pubescent. Flowers 15–18 mm diam.; stamens 15–20, anthers white or cream.
Phenology: Flowering Apr; fruiting Sep–Oct.
Habitat: Pastures, fencerows, scrub, open woodlands
Elevation: 10–200 m
Discussion
Variety hirtiflora is common west of the Mississippi River.
