Plants 30–70 cm. Leaves opposite; petioles 0–2 mm; blades 1- or, obscurely, 3-nerved from bases, narrowly oblong to linear, 5–40 × 1–3.5 mm, margins entire. Heads in paniculiform or corymbiform arrays. Peduncles 5–60 mm. Involucres 7–11 mm. Phyllaries green to stramineous, sometimes purple-tinged. Florets 9–13; corollas pale yellow to maroon, 6–6.5 mm. Cypselae 3.5–5 mm.
Phenology: Flowering Jun–Sep.
Habitat: Piney woods
Elevation: 10–50+ m
Discussion
Of conservation concern.
Variety floridana is known only from southern Florida.
