Hairs dendroid-stelliform, to 1 mm, eglandular, occasionally also jointed, branched or simple, 2–4 mm, eglandular. Corollas with pale to dark brown smudges. Fruiting calyces 15–30 mm wide. 2n = 24.


Phenology: Flowering Mar–Oct.
Habitat: Sandy soil, prairies, roadsides, dis­turbed habitats.
Elevation: 50–200 m.

Discussion

Variety mollis can be distinguished by its dense, eglandular tomentum, which often obscures the leaf surface.
