Stems 15–35 cm. Leaves: basal and proximal cauline (17–)20–75 × 6–18 mm. Thyrses: axis moderately to densely glandular-pubescent, verticillasters 2–6. 2n = 16.


Phenology: Flowering Jul–Aug(–Sep).
Habitat: Subalpine and alpine meadows.
Elevation: 2100–3300 m.

Discussion

Variety cephalophorus occurs at the southern end of the range of Penstemon heterodoxus; it has been documented in Alpine, Fresno, Inyo, Kern, Madera, Mono, and Tulare counties.
