Shrubs, erect, 2-50 dm, often weakly rhizomatous. Leaves usually tardily deciduous, rarely persistent. Inflorescences axillary, racemes, (leafy), borne on previous year’s shoots. Pedicels continuous with calyx tube. Flowers: sepals 5; petals 5, connate for nearly their entire lengths, corolla (open in bud), campanulate; stamens 10, exserted; anthers with awns, tubules 4-6 mm, terminating in lacinate pores. Berries pseudo 10-locular. Seeds 5-16.
