Discussion

F. S. Crosswhite (1965) hypothesized that var. trichander is the product of hybridization and introgression between Penstemon barbatus and P. strictus; Crosswhite noted that var. trichander occurs where var. torreyi and P. strictus are sympatric. Variety trichander is concentrated in the Four Corners region.
