Stems and leaves moderately to densely hairy. 2n = 18.
Phenology: Flowering mid summer–early fall.
Habitat: Dry to moist sandy soils in open areas in oak and pine woods, along dry streams, granitic and serpentine barrens
Elevation: 800–2200 m
Discussion
Subspecies californicus grows in the Sierra Nevada.
