Leaf blades linear to linear-oblanceolate, mid 20–80 × 2–6 mm, margins entire, faces glabrate, puberulent, or canescent. Involucres hemispheric, 8–12 mm, widths 2–3 times heights. Phyllaries 90–100, 0.5–1 mm wide (at midpoint), apices long-acuminate, 2–5 mm. Ray florets 20–60. 2n = 8.
Phenology: Flowering Aug–Sep.
Habitat: Meadows and open areas in coniferous forests
Elevation: 2400–3000 m
Discussion
Variety mucronata is known from the Kaibab Plateau (northcentral Arizona).
