Herbs 1–3.1 dm. Stems unbranched, sometimes branched. Leaves broadly lanceolate, 1–4.5 cm, 3–5-lobed, apex acute. Inflorescences 2–12 × 1–4 cm; bracts distally red, red-orange, or orange, 3–5-lobed, apex acute. Calyces proximally green to yellowish, lobe apices colored as bracts, 14–24 mm; abaxial and adaxial clefts 7–14 mm, 50% of calyx length, lateral 7–8 mm, 33–50% of calyx length; lobe apex acuminate. Corollas 26–31 mm; tube 9–14 mm; beak 9–14 mm. 2n = 24.


Phenology: Flowering May–Aug.
Habitat: Dry rocky slopes, alpine and open subalpine forests.
Elevation: 2100–3400 m.

Discussion

Variety viscida occurs in the mountains of southeastern Idaho, Utah, and extreme southwestern Wyoming.
