Leaf blades trullate or broadly trullate, 5–8 cm, adaxial surface densely scabrous-pubescent, glabrescent. Inflorescence branches densely villous, variably glabrescent by anthesis. Flowers: hypanthium pubescent.


Phenology: Flowering May–Jun; fruiting Sep–Oct.
Habitat: Brush, roadsides, woodland edges
Elevation: 50–900 m

Discussion

Variety asperifolia, like var. scabrida, has a wide range from the southern Great Lakes area to the Virginia Blue Ridge. It is particularly distinct, thus perhaps worthy of specific rank, and may be locally common.
