Habitat: Open sites, earth, rock faces, epiphytic on tree bases, logs in forest
Elevation: moderate to high elevations
Distribution
Alta., B.C., Colo., Europe, e Asia, Antarctica.
Discussion
Distribution for variety ravaudii is based on that given by H. Ando (1973), but it is doubtless infrequently scattered through the range of the species, producing sporophytes in summer. The variety is troublesome to determine because of its lack of the characteristic revolute leaf margins (except sometimes near the base), and the costa is difficult to discern.
