Subshrubs, 12–18 dm; herbage light green to dark green, glabrate or glandular-pubescent. Leaves: petiole length 1/6–1/3 blade; blade deltate to ovate or lanceolate, 8–15 cm, length 1–2 times width, base cordate to truncate, margins serrate to dentate. Pedicels slender to moderately stout, densely villous. Flowers: corolla dark brown-red, unicolored, sometimes ± bicolored, paler abaxially, 8–11 mm, throat narrow; staminode awnlike, rudimentary, or lacking. 2n = ca. 94–96.
Phenology: Flowering Feb–May.
Habitat: Canyon bottoms, coastal scrub, chaparral.
Elevation: 0–400 m.
Distribution
Calif., Mexico (Baja California).
Discussion
Scrophularia villosa occurs on San Clemente and Santa Catalina islands, California, and Guadalupe Island, Mexico.
