Stem internodes usually subequal. Leaf blades: proximals obovate to oblanceolate, distals usually relatively broader, apices of proximals abruptly acute-acuminate, distals abruptly acuminate, sometimes cuspidate.

Phenology: Flowering Feb–Jun(–Sep).
Habitat: Washes, dry hillsides, limestone outcrops, scree slopes, periphery of trees and shrubs.
Elevation: (10–)100–2300(–3300) m.

Distribution

Ariz., Calif., Nev., Utah.

Discussion

Leaves of var. cuspidatus sometimes are more congested near stem tips under conditions of severe drought stress. Seeds from plants identified as Mimulus spissus, with leaves and flowers densely crowded at least distally, were greenhouse grown by D. M. Thompson (2005), who found that they produced plants identical to var. cuspidatus.
