Stems 3–20(–28) cm. Leaves: basal and proximal cauline 15–55(–70) × 3–15 mm; cauline 11–45 × 3–13 mm, blade lanceolate to elliptic or oblong. Thyrses 1–5(–13) cm, verticillasters 1 or 2(–5). Flowers: calyx lobes (2–)3–4.8(–5.5) × 1–2 mm, apex cuspidate or short-caudate; corolla 8–11 mm; pollen sacs 0.4–0.5 mm; staminode: distal 0.5–1 mm densely pilose, hairs yellow or golden yellow, to 0.5 mm. 2n = 16.


Phenology: Flowering Jun–Sep.
Habitat: Rocky, montane to alpine slopes, ridges, meadows.
Elevation: 1200–2300 m.

Discussion

Variety tolmiei is known from the northern Cascade Range from east-central British Columbia through eastern Washington nearly to the Columbia River and the Olympic Mountains in Washington.
