Discussion
Variety engelmannii is red-fruited and is the most common variety in Missouri; it extends without break from Kansas to Louisiana and Alabama. Crataegus signata possibly does not belong; it has three to five styles, and Beadle compares it to C. ashei (ser. Bracteatae) in his protologue.
