Leaves mostly reclining to prostrate; blades usually linear to oblanceolate, rarely spatulate, 3–10(–15) cm × 1–15(–24) mm, margins toothed to lobed, sometimes laciniately pinnatifid or entire, lobes filiform to oblanceolate, faces glabrous or sparsely villous. Phyllaries lanceolate to obovate or oblong, margins ciliate to tomentose, faces glabrous or villous (hairs translucent, whitish or yellowish, sometimes purple-septate), ± stipitate-glandular. Corollas surpassing phyllaries at flowering, ligules 8–16 mm; anthers 3.5–4.5 mm. Cypselae ± dimorphic, whitish or purplish, ribs ridged to subalate, straight or slightly undulate, often diminishing proximally, glabrous or scabrous. 2n = 36.
Phenology: Flowering Apr–May (year-round).
Habitat: Coastal dunes
Elevation: 0–100 m
Discussion
Variety apargioides occurs from San Francisco southward to Point Sur.
