Discussion
Specimens referable to var. procumbens come from Carbon Peak, Kebler Pass, and West Elk Mountains. D. D. Keck (1937) noted the strong resemblance of the type specimen to Penstemon caespitosus subsp. suffruticosus A. Gray (= P. xylus). More material is needed to determine where var. procumbens fits in the P. crandallii/P. caespitosus complex.
