Herbs, perennial, 10–15 dm; herbage light green to dark green, glandular-pubescent. Leaves: petiole length 1/3–7/12 blade; blade deltate or ovate to lanceolate, 5–9(–11) cm, length 1.1–2 times width, base cordate to truncate, margins serrate to dentate. Pedicels slender, glabrate or stipitate-glandular. Flowers: corolla black-red, unicolored, sometimes ± bicolored, paler abaxially, 9–11 mm, throat constricted; staminode obovate, length greater than width, apex acute. 2n = ca. 92–96.
Phenology: Flowering Apr–Jul.
Habitat: Calcareous, diatomaceous soils.
Elevation: 0–400 m.
Discussion
Scrophularia atrata is known from San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.
