Herbs 2–8 dm. Stems: hairs long, sometimes short, soft. Leaves 0(–5)-lobed. Bracts distally red, orange-red, or pale orange, rarely yellow, broadly lanceolate to oblong, 0–5-lobed; lobes linear or often narrowly oblanceolate, long. Calyces proximally pale green or green, sometimes with a yellow central band, 14–26 mm; abaxial and adaxial clefts 3–8 mm, 20–44% of calyx length; lobes broadly lanceolate to ovate or oblong, apex acute, obtuse, or rounded. Corolla beaks 9–18(–23) mm; abaxial lip deep green with white teeth or red with green teeth. 2n = 24, 48, 72.
Phenology: Flowering Mar–Sep.
Habitat: Chaparral, dry rocky or gravelly slopes, open conifer forests, sagebrush steppes.
Elevation: 100–2900 m.
Distribution
Calif., Mexico (Baja California).
Discussion
