Stems 20–75(–85) cm, some­times sparsely strigillose dis­tally, without lines. Leaf blades usually light green, very narrowly lanceolate to lanceolate or narrowly elliptic, (2–)3–7.2 × 0.5–1.6 cm, length/width ratio more than 4. Flowers: floral tube 0.7–2.3 × 1.4–2.5 mm; sepals 3–7.5 × 1–1.7 mm; petals usually pink to rose-purple, rarely white, (4–)5–10(–12) × 2–4.5(–5) mm; filaments of longer stamens 3–5.5(–6) mm, those of shorter ones 1.4–4 mm; ovary 19–42 mm, style 1.7–5(–7) mm. Capsules 45–75 mm. 2n = 36.


Phenology: Flowering Jun–Oct.
Habitat: Well-drained, gravelly soils, seepage areas, damp meadows, stream banks, roadside ditches, mainly lower to mid montane.
Elevation: (150–)300–2800(–3300) m.

Distribution

Ariz., Calif., Idaho, Nev., Oreg., Utah, Wash., Mexico (Baja California, Chihuahua).

Discussion

Subspecies glaberrimum extends into mountainous areas of Baja California and Chihuahua, Mexico, much farther south than subsp. fastigiatum, which in turn occurs much farther north.
