Leaves hispidulous or strigose and often hirsute, all or distal densely stipitate-glandular. Heads in spiciform-racemiform to spiciform-paniculiform arrays. Peduncles 0 or 1–3 mm, bracts (and calyculi) surpassing phyllaries. Calyculi usually of 5–7, sometimes 0, bractlets. Phyllaries 6–12 mm, apices usually longer than bodies. Ray florets 5–8; laminae white, abaxially purple-veined. Cypsela widths 0.5–0.6 times lengths. 2n = 28.
Phenology: Flowering Jul–Nov.
Habitat: Clay soils, grasslands, openings in woodlands
Elevation: 200–1400 m
Discussion
Of conservation concern.
Subspecies calyculata occurs in the North Inner Coast Ranges and northern Sacramento Valley.
