Discussion
Species 1.
Penstemon petiolatus is the only member of sect. Petiolati. D. D. Keck (1937) noted morphologic similarities between P. petiolatus and P. clevelandii of sect. Spectabiles. Penstemon petiolatus has not been examined molecularly.
