Plants annual, tufted. Culms 2-7(10) cm, ascending or decumbent. Sheaths closed, inflated; auricles absent; ligules membranous, ovate; blades flat. Inflorescences panicles; branches distant, verticillate. Spikelets slightly laterally compressed, pedicellate, pedicels hairy, with 1 floret; rachillas not prolonged beyond the base of the floret; disarticulation below the floret. Glumes absent; calluses short, glabrous; lemmas 1-veined, narrowed to awnlike apices; paleas 2-4-toothed, 2-keeled; lodicules absent; anthers 2; ovaries glabrous. Caryopses elliptic, exceeding the lemmas and paleas, falling free; hila oval, x = 7.

Discussion
Coleanthus is a monospecific genus that is native to Eurasia and North America.
