Plants 1–5 m, usually treelike. Twigs red to brown, glabrescent. Leaves deciduous; blade widely elliptic or obovate, 6–15 cm, herbaceous, base usually cuneate, margins irregularly toothed or entire, apex obtuse to truncate, surfaces not papillate, sparsely hairy or glabrous, not glaucous adaxially when fresh.


Phenology: Flowering Mar–Jun.
Habitat: Coniferous forest edges, stream banks, non-serpentine substrates.
Elevation: 1000–2000 m.
