Trees, to 70[–300] dm. Winter buds glutinous [or not]. Leaves simple; petiole nodes 3-lacunate; blade margins relatively shallowly lobed [entire or toothed]. Flowers: styles distinct. Pomes: epidermis single-layered [rarely multilayered]; flesh with tanniferous cells in groups; core present [absent].

Distribution

Europe, Asia, n Africa.

Discussion

Species ca. 40 (1 in the flora).

Some species of apparent hybrid origin between subg. Aria and other subgenera exhibit more deeply lobed leaves and/or pome flesh composed entirely of tanniferous cells.
