Rhizomes usually homogeneous (heterogeneous in ser. Prismaticae; heterogeneous or torulose in ser. Vernae), spreading or compact. Sepals with signal of conspicuous lines or patch of contrasting color.

North America, Eurasia.

Species ca. 70 (28 in the flora).
