Leaf blades short-ovate to broadly elliptic, 4 cm, adaxial surface sparsely to densely appressed-pubescent young. Inflorescence branches sparsely to densely villous. Flowers: hypanthium pubescent.
Phenology: Flowering May–Jun; fruiting Sep–Oct.
Habitat: Brush, roadsides, woodland edges
Elevation: 30–200 m
Distribution
Que., Mass., Mich., N.H., N.Y., Vt.
Discussion
Variety egglestonii is nearly restricted to New England, adjacent New York, and the St. Lawrence valley in Quebec. E. J. Palmer (1950) recorded the variety from Nova Scotia and, if so, it probably also occurs in Maine; it appears to be scarce.
