Stems and leaves strigose to puberulo-hirsutulous. Phyllaries densely strigose to hirsute or hirsuto-villous, minutely glandular. 2n = 18.
Phenology: Flowering May–Jul(–Aug).
Habitat: Dry, sandy or rocky soils, lava beds, talus, shale, serpentine barrens, meadows, sagebrush, sagebrush-mountain mahogany, pinyon or pinyon-juniper, pine (yellow, white, or Jeffrey)
Elevation: (800–)1500–2500(–3000) m
