Perennials 6–35 cm; rhizomes short, stout. Stems 1 or 2(or 3), unbranched, fleshy. Leaves: basal long-petiolate; cauline short-petiolate or sessile. Spikes capitate to cylindric, 15–77 mm, elongating in fruit to 4–14 cm; bracts enlarging post anthesis. Flowers: calyx lobe margins entire or ciliate; style exserted.

Distribution

N.W.T., Yukon, Alaska, Asia (Russian Far East, Siberia).

Discussion

Subspecies 3 (2 in the flora).

Subspecies minor (Willdenow) Hultén occurs in Eurasia.
