Caudices simple or 2–3-branched, 1–3.5 cm diam. Inflorescences: floral shoots 5–20-leaved, 5–30 cm; cincinni 3+, 4–10-flowered, mostly 1–6 cm. Petals mostly bright yellow to red, 10–12 × 2–3.5 mm. 2n = 34.
Phenology: Flowering spring–early summer.

Discussion
A report of subsp. cymosa from southwestern Oregon (J. A. Bartel 1993) is unfounded.
