Flowering stems erect, (15–)25–60 cm. Leaves of basal stems mostly 2-ranked; blade lanceolate. Inner sepals broadly ovate, apex obtuse. Capsules depressed-globose, ± equaling calyx.
Phenology: Flowering summer; fruiting late summer–fall.
Habitat: Dry open woodlands and sand plains, burned areas and rock outcrops
Elevation: 10–1500 m

Man., N.B., N.S., Ont., P.E.I., Que., Conn., Ill., Iowa, Maine, Mass., Minn., Mont., N.H., N.J., N.Y., N.Dak., Ohio, Pa., R.I., S.Dak., Va., Wis., Wyo.
