Plants small to medium-sized, yellow to green. Stems freely branched; hyalodermis absent, central strand present; paraphyllia absent; rhizoids or rhizoid initials on stem or abaxial costa insertion, rarely forming tomentum, slightly to strongly branched, smooth or rarely granular-papillose; axillary hair distal cells 1 or 2, hyaline. Stem and branch leaves erect, spreading, or subsecund, ovate to oblong-lanceolate, not plicate, 0.7–1(–1.4) mm; base not decurrent; margins erect, entire to ± crenulate distally, limbidia absent; apex short-acuminate, acumen not furrowed; costa single to mid leaf or beyond; alar cells ± differentiated; medial and distal laminal cells short-rhomboid to linear. Sexual condition autoicous. Capsule erect, oblong-cylindric, straight; peristome specialized; exostome teeth short, external and internal surfaces minutely papillose throughout, margins entire; endostome basal membrane absent, cilia absent. Spores 10–15 µm.

Distribution

North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, temperate and tropical areas.

Discussion

Species ca. 12 (1 in the flora).
