Cauline leaves 20–80 × 3–7 mm, reduced distally. Involucres 12–14 mm. Phyllary faces moderately to densely sericeous. Ray florets 13–25; laminae 9–15 mm. Disc florets 30–37; corollas 3.6–6 mm, lobes 0.4–0.8 mm, throats and lobes sometimes sparsely to moderately long-pilose. 2n = 54.

Phenology: Flowering late fall–winter.
Habitat: Sandy and rocky soils, margins of pine woods and shrublands
Elevation: 0–30 m

Discussion

Variety tracyi is possibly adventive in northern Alabama. Spring-blooming plants of var. graminifolia can look similar because of aberrant development of only a few, and therefore larger, heads. This is the only variety with sometimes moderately long-pilose disc corolla throats and lobes throughout.
