Leaf blades usually grayish, faces lanate. Peduncles usually lanate, or rarely stipitate-glandular proximal to heads. Mid and inner phyllaries 2–4 mm wide, margins broad, 0.3–0.7 mm wide, scarious.
Phenology: Flowering late spring; fruiting early summer.
Habitat: Sagebrush steppe, open pine forests, alpine meadows, on basaltic or granitic soils
Elevation: 300–2900 m

Calif., Idaho, Nev., Oreg., Wash.
