Stems retrorsely hairy, hairs sometimes appressed, white, scalelike, and sometimes also glandular-villous distally. Leaves glabrous abaxially, retrorsely hairy or puberulent adaxially, hairs sometimes appressed, white, scalelike. Flowers: corolla lavender to violet, funnelform, 18–28 mm, not constricted at orifice; pollen sacs navicular to subexplanate, 1.2–1.6 mm; staminode: distal 3–5 mm sparsely lanate, hairs yellow, to 1 mm; style 12–14 mm.
Phenology: Flowering May–Jun.
Habitat: Sandy or gravelly soils, juniper woodlands.
Elevation: 300–1300 m.
Discussion
Variety argillosus is known from north-central Oregon. Populations are concentrated in the John Day and Deschutes river drainages in Crook, Gilliam, Grant, and Wheeler counties.
