Stems simple or branched, 5–40 cm. Flowers: calyx tube 2–3 mm, lobes erect, apex truncate or acute; corolla 7.5–12 mm, throat glabrous or glabrate within across bases and sinus of adaxial lobes, or sparsely villous at lateral-lobe sinuses; anthers and filaments glabrous or glabrate; style included, 6–9 mm.
Phenology: Flowering Jul–Sep.
Habitat: Salt marshes, salt flats, tidal flats, edges of saline or brackish pools, ditches.
Elevation: 0–10 m.
Distribution
N.S., Conn., Del., Maine, Md., Mass., N.H., N.Y., N.C., R.I., Va.
Discussion
Variety maritima is known historically from New Brunswick; it is considered extirpated in that province.
