Herbs (0.5–)1–3 dm. Leaves: margins plane, sometimes ± wavy, (0–)3–5(–7)-lobed; lobes spreading. Bracts distally pale greenish to yellow-green, whitish, or pale pink, rarely purplish, lanceolate to elliptic or ovate, not rigid, veins inconspicuous, usually same color as surface. Calyces colored as bracts, sometimes distally purple with age, 11–23 mm; abaxial clefts 8–13.6 mm, adaxial 7–8.2 mm, lateral (0.9–)2.4–4.3 mm; lobes triangular to lanceolate. Corollas subequal to calyx or beak slightly exserted; beak adaxially whitish; abaxial lip green or white, sometimes distally pink or reddish; teeth white or pink. 2n = 24, 48.
Phenology: Flowering Jun–Aug.
Habitat: Grasslands, dry rocky slopes, sagebrush steppes, open forests, meadows, fellfields, valleys, alpine.
Elevation: 1500–2900 m.
Distribution
Idaho, Mont., Wyo.
Discussion
Variety pallescens is found in northeastern Idaho, southwestern Montana, and northwestern Wyoming.
