Plants (2–)6–15(–25+) cm. Leaves: blades oblanceolate to linear-oblanceolate, glabrous or sparsely to moderately hairy (not strigoso-canescent or sericeous), some (usually most or all) eglandular or sparsely gland-dotted. Heads 1–10(–15) per plant. Peduncles (1–)5–15(–25) cm. Outer phyllaries 6–12, 5–7.5 mm, margins 0–0.2 mm wide, sometimes slightly scarious, abaxial faces ± hairy. Ray florets 10–14; corollas 11–19 mm. Cypselae 3–4 mm; pappi 2.8–3.7 mm. 2n = 28, 56.

Phenology: Flowering May–Jul(–Sep).
Habitat: Roadsides, hillsides, edges of woods
Elevation: 1600–2700(–3500) m

Discussion

Some plants of Hymenoxys acaulis from south-central to northeastern Utah and northwestern Colorado have moderately gland-dotted leaf blades. We interpret them to be intermediates between var. epunctata and var. arizonica. Plants referable to var. epunctata have eglandular or very sparsely gland-dotted blades; those referable to var. arizonica have densely gland-dotted blades.
