Subspecies villosum is parasitic mainly on oaks, including Quercus agrifolia, Q. douglasii, and Q. lobata (V. E. Thompson and B. E. Mahall 1983), but can be found on Aesculus, Arctostaphylos, Betula, Populus, Robinia, and Salix. The subspecies is distributed from the Coast Ranges and Willamette Valley of Oregon south through the Sierra Nevada and Coast and Transverse ranges of California into northern Baja California.
