Plants 8–45 cm. Leaves: basal 1–4, blade linear to lanceolate, 6–20 x 2–4 mm, 1-pinnatifid, margins of adjacent lobes nonoverlapping, serrate, surfaces glabrous; cauline 0–10, blade lanceolate to triangular, 6–65 x 1–20 mm, 1- or 2-pinnatifid, margins of adjacent lobes nonoverlapping, serrate, surfaces glabrous or hispid to tomentose. Racemes simple or paniculate, 1–6, exceeding basal leaves, each 10–20-flowered; bracts triangular to deltate, 7–20 x 3–8 mm, 1- or 2-pinnatifid, margins serrate, surfaces glabrous or hispid. Pedicels 1–4 mm. Flowers: calyx 5–10 mm, glabrous or hispid to tomentose, lobes 2(–4), round, oval, or trullate to deltate, 1–5 mm, apex dentate, glabrous; corolla 16–20 mm, tube white or light purple, 7–11 mm; galea purple, 6.5–9 mm, beakless, margins 1-toothed medially and distally, apex arching over abaxial lip and upturned; abaxial lip pink to purple, 5–9 mm. 2n = 16 (Europe).


Phenology: Flowering Jun–Aug.
Habitat: Marshes, bogs, swamps, ditches.
Elevation: 10–2600 m.
