Shrubs or small trees, erect, to 10 m. Twigs dark purplish brown to nearly black, not flexuous, ridged, pruinose, gla­brous or pubescent. Leaves com­pound, 10–33 mm; petiole 0–2 mm, glabrous, gland absent; pinnae 2–5 pairs, 10–28 mm, 4–9 mm between pinna pairs; leaflets 8–24 pairs per pinna, blades oblong, 3.5–7.5 × 0.8–1.3 mm, base obtuse, apex obtuse to acute, not apiculate, surfaces glabrous. Peduncles 2–6 mm. Inflo­rescences globose heads, densely flowered, 4–8 mm diam., in axillary pseudoracemes of 8–35 heads or terminal pseudopanicles of 1–15 pseudoracemes. Flowers 5-merous, bright yellow; calyx 0.4–0.9 mm; corolla 1.2–2 mm; filaments 2.5–3.5 mm; ovary gla­brous. Legumes flattened, oblong, 30–150 × 7–13 mm, sometimes slightly constricted between some seeds. Seeds: aril light yellow, obovate, 2–3 mm, forming small cap on seed. 2n = 26.

Habitat: Disturbed areas.
Elevation: 100–500 m.

Acacia baileyana is known from Alameda, Contra Costa, Los Angeles, Monterey, Napa, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Diego, and Ventura counties.
