Plants annual, erect. Leaves without Kranz-type anatomy. Pistillate flowers dimorphic, either ebracteolate and with 3–5-lobed perianth enveloping a horizontal seed, or lacking a perianth and enclosed by a pair of bracteoles enveloping a vertical seed. Bracteoles ovate to orbicular, distinct almost to base. Seed erect; radicle inferior.

Introduced; Asia.
