Variety australis McVaugh (A. aspera Cogniaux) differs in reduced vestiture and pistillate inflorescence; it occurs in Mexico (Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Michoacán, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas). According to McVaugh, the two varieties are allopatric.
